Carl Graczyk

August 26, 1939 — December 24, 2015

Carl Edward Graczyk, age 76, of Cumru Township passed away Christmas Eve day, December 24, 2015, in Reading Hospital after battling several medical issues over the last few years. He was the husband of Rita M. (Weidenheimer) Graczyk. Born in West Reading, Carl was the son of the late Anthony S. and Mary A. (Kuzniar) Graczyk.

Carl was proud of his Polish heritage, still able to speak the language and assisted with Polka dance lessons. He was an excellent cook best known for his golumpkie, crab cakes and Polish raisin bread at Christmas and Easter.

He served in the U.S. Air Force where he earned the rank of Sergeant. He piloted a two-seater plane while stationed in Texas. He was also stationed in Alaska when the Earthquake hit in 1962.

He was the sole proprietor of Graczyk Business Equipment for over 25 years servicing all types of business equipment from cash registers to typewriters, calculators and time stamp equipment throughout Berks, Lancaster and Lebanon Counties.

Carl did a lot of volunteer work.

He served as past board member and treasurer of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Berks County and for over 25 years also served as a Big Brother to many young boys coaching them into adulthood.

He was a tutor at LaSalle Academy and also tutored a Polish student at Governor Mifflin School. He later worked in the after school program at LaSalle.

Carl volunteered at the Berks Encore Senior Expo for several years.

He bowled with a group at the Shillington Fire Company once earning an almost perfect score.

In addition to his wife, Rita, Carl is survived by one son, John O. Graczyk, of whom he was especially proud. Other survivors include his niece, Julie A. Twiford; sister-in-law, Ada Graczyk; brothers-in-law, Harry and Roger Weidenheimer; good friend, Brian Craze and God children, Nicolas Warischalk and Nicole Craze. Carl was predeceased by his brother, Anthony J. Graczyk

Carl was a member of St. John the Baptist De La Salle Roman Catholic Church.

He held memberships with Mohnton Fish and Game where he once served as a Trustee, Grill Fire Company, Eighteenth Ward Democratic Club, Berks Encore and American Diabetes Association.

Through all his medical issues, Carl never felt sorry for himself. He always thought the other guy was worse off than he was.

Carl was especially blessed this Christmas with God’s gift of release from pain and hardship. Merry Christmas, Carl, with all our love and affection. Your loving wife, Rita, and son, John.
