Hazel Keen

March 22, 1921 — April 18, 2017

Hazel Mae Keen, 96, formerly of Geigertown, PA, passed away on April 18, 2017, after a short illness, in the Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, DE. She was the wife of Samuel H. Keen for 55 years, until his death in June of 1998. Born on March 22, 1921, in Robeson Township, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Alice (Kurtz) Everhart. During WW2 she worked at Dolan's supporting the war effort manufacturing grenade firing pins. She was employed at the Robeson Elementary School as a cook and she also worked as a seamstress for the Ladies Garment Worker's Union. Hazel was a member of Saint James Lutheran Church in Geigertown, PA. Hazel loved and was very devoted to her family and friends. She enjoyed life and having fun. Hazel was an avid Phillies fan, enjoyed bowling, fishing, clamming, crabbing, playing cards with friends and volunteering in local community events. Until her death she was still actively working with Judy as a painter and doing preparation for metal sculpture art. Hazel is survived by three daughters, Janet Keen of Glenmoore,PA, widow of Professor Benjamin Gebhart, Judy Hagen wife of Louis Hagen of Millsboro, DE, with whom she resided and Hope Keen wife of Gerry Garrison, Reading, PA. She has two grandchildren, Samuel Keen of Ercildoun, PA, and Sheila Hagen, wife of James Grant of Rougemount, NC.
She is also survived by two sisters, Thelma Griffith and Mary Ellen Messner. She was pre-deceased by her brothers, Raymond, William and Charles. Visitation with family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. with services beginning at 10:30 a.m. in St. James Lutheran Church, 1337 Geigertown Road, Geigertown, PA 19523. Interment in the adjoining cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Saint James Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 5, Geigertown, PA 19523. Lutz Funeral Home, Inc. in charge of arrangements.
