John Miravich

August 13, 1927 — April 8, 2017

John Miravich, 89, formerly of Minersville, then Shenandoah, passed away Saturday, April 8, 2017, in his home in Blandon, Pa. after a long battle with kidney disease.
Born on August 13, 1927, in Jonestown, Pa., he was a son of the late Anna (Keyso) Miravich and Michael Miravich.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Dolores (Dombruski); son, John Joseph Miravich, wife Patricia (Brown) and their children Hannah, Faith, Simeon, and Casimir; son, Mark Miravich and wife Carrie (Matakonis) and their children, Anthony and Della; sister, Anna (Miravich) Sausnock, Linden, N.J.; brother, Frank Miravich and his wife, Francis, Bethlehem; many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by brother, Michael Keyso, Minersville and his brother-in-law, Harry Sausnock.
John graduated from Minersville High School in 1947. He served in the Army during the Korean War as a military police officer in Germany. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad on the navvy gang to lay down spikes from Reading to Philadelphia, and the Mirawal Company in Port Carbon as a fork lift and machine operator. He worked for a short time in New Jersey for Hankins Container Corporation, and worked for Siswein’s Furniture Store in Shenandoah. He also was a master house painter and wallpaper hanger and often took on these jobs during weekends and vacations to support his family. He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Minersville, St. George Catholic Church in Shenandoah and St. Catharine of Siena Catholic Church in Reading.
John and Dolores’ favorite pastime was dancing to big band music, polkas, and jitterbugs; they met at a dance at the Minersville Amvets Club. They were frequent dancers at Lakewood and Lakeside Halls, Barnesville, Maher’s Dance Hall in Shenandoah, and managed to dance around the bar at Tellup’s Tap Room in Minersville. If you asked him how long he had been married, he would say: “I’ve been married all my life.” They continued their love for dancing by watching “Dancing with the Stars." Friends and family knew not to call during its airing.

John was always supportive of his two sons and coached them in Shenandoah’s Little League and Teener League Baseball and CYO basketball. He was especially proud to serve as the Treasurer of Shenandoah Boy Scout Troop 21, where both sons eventually obtained the rank of Eagle Scout.

John so loved his six grandchildren. His joy was spending time with them and making them endless amounts of Pierogies and Holubce. He taught them to tie their shoes. In return, they tied his in the last years of his life. Not only will the family miss him, but the neighbors and local community will miss him, too. He especially loved going to the local bank and grocery stores and he would do anything for his neighbors.
PopPop, even at your age, you left the world too soon, but you never will be truly gone; we will cherish your memory in our hearts. Navigator, comrade, neighbor, husband, father, grandfather, all these things and more; he meant so much to us.
John Miravich truly lived to give and show love to others. “As we prepare to leave this life, we will be judged on the basis of love.” St. John of the Cross. May God receive John with open arms and thank His loyal, faithful and loving servant.
