Affordable Cremation Services in Reading PA

There are important factors to consider when deciding between cremation and burial in Reading, PA, including costs. Cremation services can be far more affordable, and may afford your family and loved ones much greater flexibility in arranging memorial services and funerals.

As a five-generation family business since 1884, Lutz Funeral Home understands how difficult it can be to cope with the loss of a loved one. Whether you choose burial or cremation, we will help you make decisions by providing information and explaining the many available options.

What is Cremation?

In the simplest of terms, cremation is the process of reducing the human body to bone fragments by means of intense heat.  The one- to three-hour process helps reduce the body to three to seven pounds of cremains, often called “ashes,” that are usually pale to dark grey in color.

The cremated remains can be stored in an urn and displayed on a shelf or mantle at home, disbursed among family and friends, scattered on land (with the landowner’s consent), scattered from the air by plane, scattered at sea (generally at least three miles from the shoreline), placed in a columbarium, buried in a burial plot, or entombed in a crypt within a mausoleum. It is even possible to send your loved one’s cremains into space.

Our Cremation Services

Most funeral homes today offer cremation services. However, many of them utilize third parties to perform their cremations off-site, often in cemeteries or industrial-type warehouses due to the significant financial investment, government regulations, and requirements for skilled staff and extensive training.

At Lutz Funeral Home, we pride ourselves on operating our own private, on-site crematory. Our funeral directors are licensed by the State of Pennsylvania and certified to perform cremations to ensure that all aspects of the cremation process are controlled and supervised. The advantages we offer include:

  • Your loved one never has to leave the shelter of our expert care.
  • Our rigorous set of operating policies and procedures maximizes the level of quality we provide.
  • Our experienced staff is accountable directly to you, and we invite you to witness any or all aspects of the cremation process.
  • Cremains may be placed in the urn of your choice from the large selection of cremation urns we have available for purchase.
  • We offer natural choices, such as Green Cremation.
  • We are available 24/7 and can expedite the entire cremation process.

Direct Cremation

Cremation is a simple and dignified option that can be an affordable alternative to the typical funeral service.  Some people choose direct cremation to keep costs low.

Direct cremation does not include a viewing, wake, funeral or memorial service, and begins with transportation of the body to the crematory in the days immediately following death. Once cremation is complete, the cremains are transferred to a simple container, often called an “alternative container” or “cremation container,” and given to the family or representative of the deceased for disposition.

Families who choose direct cremation can eliminate the costs associated with embalming the body, purchasing a casket, cemetery plot, burial vault or grave liner, and other expenses related to traditional funeral and memorial services.

Memorial Services

If you are interested in a direct cremation but want to also hold a memorial service or celebration of life, this can be held at a later date at Lutz Funeral Home, in your home, place of worship, park, or anywhere else of your choosing.  We can help you arrange these services at an affordable price.

If you are interested in affordable cremation services in or near Reading, PA, get in touch with Lutz Funeral Home at 610-376-7121. We monitor all aspects of the cremation process and will ensure that everything is handled properly and with the utmost care.
