Tips for Keeping Funeral Expenses Low

A funeral is an important step in recovering from loss, but honoring the life and memory of your loved one does not have to be beyond your means. There are many ways to reduce funeral costs, and our Lutz Funeral Directors will explain the many available options and assist you with all aspects of planning.

In the absence of pre-planned funeral arrangements, the first steps should be for the grieving family to agree about what is important, and set a budget to avoid emotional overspending. Here are several ways to reduce the funeral expenses:

Consider direct cremation or direct burial. Direct cremation involves cremation of the body in the days immediately following death. There is no viewing, visitation, or funeral service before the cremation, and usually no expense for embalming or other preparation of the body. If, however, you plan to bury the cremated remains in a cemetery plot or inter them in a columbarium, expect there to be additional cemetery costs.

Like direct cremation, direct burial means that the body is buried soon after death in a simple container, rather than in an expensive casket, without embalming or visitation. If desired, graveside services may be held at the time of burial, or a memorial service may be held at a later date.

Lutz Funeral Home will work with you to plan a direct cremation or direct burial.

Opt for cremation. In general, the cost of cremation averages 40% to 50% less than the cost of a traditional funeral because there is no casket or cemetery plot to consider.

You and your family members can still gather together to celebrate and honor your loved one, just as you would someone who is being buried in a casket. The services performed before or after the cremation, if any, are up to you.

Today, most funeral homes offer cremation services; however, many of them utilize third parties to perform their cremations off-site. Lutz Funeral Home operates its own modern, private, on-site crematory so that your loved one never has to leave the shelter of our expert care.

Choose a less expensive casket. If you are planning a traditional funeral, the casket is often one of the biggest expenses.  But prices vary widely, and choosing a less expensive casket is a good way to reduce funeral costs. Ask for a complete price list to compare all of your options, since some funeral homes do not always display the least expensive caskets.

The trained professionals at Lutz Funeral Home have provided compassionate and affordable funeral care to the families of Reading, PA for many decades and earned a solid reputation in the community. Contact us anytime at 610-376-7121. We're here to help.
