Obituary for Margaretta M. "Marge" Lonergan

Margaretta M. "Marge" Lonergan
Margaretta M. "Marge" Lonergan, 78, of Mt. Penn, passed away, Saturday, January 20, 2018 in Reading Hospital and Medical Center surrounded by numerous family members and friends. Born in Port Carbon, Pa, she was a daughter of the late Thomas J. and Kathryn M. (Seitzinger) Lonergan. Marge was a graduate of Nativity High School in Pottsville and received a Bachelor’s degree from Immaculata University. Upon graduation she entered the convent as a Sister of the Immaculate Heart of Mary where she lovingly served, taught, and administered for more than 25 years. Marge, then Sister Loretta Margaret, was principal of Immaculata High School, Somerville, NJ. In 1981 Marge reentered the workforce as a medical secretary for Dr. John Kearney and then as an aide, cook, and secretary and irreplaceable asset at St. Catherine of Siena Parish for the past 20 years.

Loved as Aunt Marge by her immediate family and by countless friends and colleagues who simply knew her as Marge. She was a second mother, friend, and confidante to all. Beautiful and extraordinary in her selflessness by all who knew her, Marge would never miss a birthday, a chance to make a call, or an opportunity to lend an ear or offer a hug. She loved to travel and was very proud of her Irish heritage. Marge had the most humble, generous and giving heart and will be greatly missed. Marge is survived by her twin sister Loretta F. Franey widow of Thomas P. Jr. of Mt. Penn, sisters Winifred A. Kerns wife of Donald of Port Carbon, Pa and Kathleen M. Brahler wife of Joseph of Pottsville, Pa and brothers Rev. Michael J. Lonergan widower of Dorothy (Birch) of Secane, Pa, and Daniel G. Lonergan husband of Alma of Millville, NJ and brother in law Walter Stutz. Marge is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by sisters Joan Stutz, Mary Frances Lonergan, Mary Therese “Sis” and her husband Edward Kelly. Marge is also pre-deceased by brothers Thomas and his wife Anne (Mulhall) Lonergan, Edward and his wife Doris (Yost) Lonergan, and John “Gene” and his wife Joan (Ofsharick) Lonergan. Visitation with family and friends will be held on Friday, January 26, 2018 from 7:00 pm -9:00 pm and Saturday morning from 9:00 am until 10:30 am in St. Catherine of Siena R.C.C 4975 Boyertown Pike, Reading Pa 19606.
