Obituary for Samuel C. DeWald

Print
Samuel Clifford DeWald, 87 of Exeter Township, passed away, October 20, 2018 in his home after a 6 month battle with cancer. Born in Reading, PA, June 24, 1931, the only child of Clifford and Alice DeWald, Samuel (Sam) was a 1950 graduate of Reading High School where he participated in a variety of school shows and student government organizations.
Shortly after graduation from RHS, Sam enlisted in the United States Army and fought in the Korean War where he was awarded numerous commendations, including the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant as part of the US 7th Infantry Division.
Upon his discharge from the military, he found his love and greatest supporter in Rosemarie Klocker (Rosie), a registered nurse at the Reading Hospital. They married in 1958.
Sam obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Albright College, a Master of Science in Education from Temple University and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from New York University (NYU). Sam held numerous positions in insurance, retailing, candy manufacturing and electronics manufacturing.
As a lifetime advocate of education, Sam became a full-time instructor in Management Development with the Pennsylvania State University teaching management in over 100 companies throughout North America, South America, Africa and Europe. In 1990 Sam was promoted to Director of Management and greatly expanded Penn State's international teaching. Sam retired from Penn State with Emeritus status having developed and established a program in Management for the Credit Unions of Pennsylvania.
After retiring from Penn State, Sam was elected and served as President of the Evergreen Country Club, Fleetwood, where he was influential in the reorganization and the restoration of the club to a position of profitability and growth. In more recent years, Sam was President of the World Affairs Council of Greater Reading where he remained an active board member.
Sam was a faithful and devoted member of Community United Church of Christ, St. Lawrence. He was one of the earliest members and continued as an enduring member for over 50 years. He served in many capacities throughout the maturation of the church from participating and leading various committees, performing as lay leader, Sunday School teacher and working with multiple pastors as consistory president. As a strong supporter for education and the community, Sam was instrumental in establishing the preschool at Community UCC.
Sam and Rosie had a great appreciation for the Arts. They enjoyed a variety of types of music and were supporting members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Reading Symphony and the Pennsylvania Ballet.
Sam will always be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. His love and appreciation of all life was ever present in his faith, support for community, devotion to animals and respect for all people.
Sam is survived by his 3 daughters, Gina M. wife of Timothy E. Gee of MD, Cynthia L. of Fleetwood, and Tracy A. wife of Adrian F. Hernandez of NC and 6 grandchildren, Jessica and Tyler Gee, Ryan, Spencer, Conor and Collin Hernandez. Visitation with family and friends will be held on Saturday October 27, 2018 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am with a service beginning at 11:00 am at Community United Church of Christ, 3330 St. Lawrence Ave., Reading, PA 19606.
