Russell Angstadt

March 18, 1926 — January 17, 2023

Russell Lee Angstadt passed away peacefully on January 17, 2023, in Wernersville at the age of 96. He was born March 18, 1926, in Reading, the son of Oren Angstadt and Ruth Mabel Diener. After rolling across Europe with the 645th Tank Destroyer unit of the US Army during World War II, he helped liberate the German concentration camp at Dachau. After he returned home, he graduated from Penn State University on the GI Bill with a degree in civil engineering. He worked for Atlantic Richfield in Florida, where he met and married Julia Godfrey. They moved their young family back to Pennsylvania in 1964 and settled in Wernersville.

He eventually left Atlantic and established his own successful construction company, after becoming licensed as a Professional Engineer. He was civic minded, serving for many years on the sewer authority for South Heidelberg Township as well as the scout leader for the local troop. He served as president of his condo’s homeowners association and the family association, The Angstadt Freundschaft, for many years.

After moving into assisted living, he founded a Civil War Roundtable. Russell was a lifelong train buff, active with the Reading Railroad Historical and Technical Society. He and Julia enjoyed traveling across the United States and around the world during their 57 years of marriage.

He watched his beloved Penn State Nittany Lions throughout his life, and was thrilled to see them win the Rose Bowl this January.

Russell is survived by his three children and their spouses, Anne Angstadt of Washington, DC, Susan and Michael Milstein of West Linn, Oregon, James and Pamela Angstadt of West Reading, and his grandson Daniel Angstadt Milstein of West Linn, Oregon. Dad, you’ll be in our hearts forever!

Memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. We are remembering Russell with a donation to the Penn State College of Engineering Future Fund. Lutz Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements. For online condolences, please visit www.LutzFuneralHome.com
