Leon C. Burkhart

Leon C. Burkhart, 85, formerly of Limekiln, passed away Wednesday, April 19, 2017 in the Delaware Hospice Facility-Milford, DE. He was the husband of Erma M. (Hetrick) Burkhart. Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Henry and Ruth (Shell) Burkhart. Leon was a graduate of Oley Valley High School and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church-Spangsville. He was a custom home builder for more than 50 years, the owner of Leon C. Burkhart, Inc. and a former president of the Home Builders Association. In addition to his wife, Leon is survived by a son, Philip H. Burkhart husband of Tammy of Exeter Township and two daughters, Joyce Ann wife of Gary Salter of South Whitehall Township and Cindy R. wife of Mark Ambrosiani of Wernersville; seven grandchildren, Troy, Kaitlyn, Kelly, Kevin, Alex, Eric and Sara Ann; one great-grandson, Benjamin; one sister, Janice wife of Daniel Schlegel, one brother, Floyd Burkhart husband of Carol; sister-in-law, Dorothy widow of William Burkhart and his aunt, Ida Hafer. He was pre-deceased by two sons, Curtis and Barry and two brothers, Henry and William.
Leon loved hunting, fishing, and traveling. He was a founding member of Chapel Rock Hunting Lodge and enjoyed his time at camp. Being an expert marksman he was the 1968 Class B Trap Shooting State Champion. As a fisherman he fished the waters of Delaware his entire life. Traveling to many destinations his favorite place was Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He was a member of the P.O.S. of A. and a former member of the Flying Dutchman Ski Club.
Visitation with family and friends will be held on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 pm in the Lutz Funeral Home Inc., 2100 Perkiomen Ave. Reading, PA 19606. Visitation will also be held on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. with services beginning at 11:00 am in Christ Lutheran Church, 325 Covered Bridge Road Oley, PA 19547. Interment in Forest Hills Memorial Park- Exeter Township. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Heart Association 968 Postal Rd. Suite 110 Allentown, PA 18109.
