Charles L. Getrost

Charles L. Getrost, 88, of Mt. Penn, passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at Reading Hospital. He was the widower of Nancy C. (Killian) Getrost, who passed away March 10, 2021, with whom he celebrated 48 years of marriage. Born in Reading, PA, he was the son of the late Charles D. and Cora M. (Geibel) Getrost. He was a graduate of Reading High School, class of 1954. Charlie proudly joined the Army right after graduating, and served 1 year at Thule Air Base, Greenland with the transarctic group as a radio operator. He was released from active duty in 1957 and honorably discharged in 1962 after fulfilling his 8-year commitment. Charlie worked with Reading Railroad telegraph office for 8 months, 12 years with Freihofer's Bakery, 29 years for Bob White Frozen Foods, and 21 years at Karetas Foods as a driver and in the warehouse until his retirement. Charlie was heavily involved in many different organizations. He spent 15 years as a coach and director with Northwest Athletic Association Youth Organization. He was a member of the Oley American Legion, Post 878, since 2007. Charlie was also a member of Teamsters Local 429 for 40 years, and worked as a shop steward at Bob White Foods for 21 years. He spent 19 years as a board member for Mt. Penn Water Authority. Charlie was strong in his convictions, sharing those opinions with the local newspaper, even if they didn't always publish them.

Charlie is survived by his children; Charlene D. Getrost, companion of James Luckenbill, Charles L. Getrost Jr. husband of Cassandra, Christine L. Getrost, fiance of Joe Endy, and Scott C. Getrost, husband of Melissa. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Anthony, Ryan, Jessica, Chef Tyler, and Brayden, Saxophone First Chair, as well as his great-grandchildren; Nathan, Jordan, and Iris. He was preceded in death by his beloved Aunt Ruth A.(Getrost) Etzel, who passed away June 12, 2001.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2024, beginning at 10:00 am in Wyomissing Cemetery, 1700 Old Lancaster Pike, Gouglersville PA, 19608. Interment will follow.
