George W. "SPIKE" Thompson Jr., of Amity Township Berks County, passed away October 21, 2024 in Reading Hospital Medical Center. He was the husband of Barbara (Peterson) Thompson with whom he shared 65 years of marriage. Born on the family farm in Amity Township, he was the son of the late George W. Thompson Sr. and Ella (Wolford) Thompson. Spike attended Amity High School where he spent most of his time in the woodshop. He was employed as a carpenter for Kutz Builders Inc. building custom homes in the area for over 50 years. Spike was lifelong member of St Paul's U.C.C. Church Amityville, Pa. where he served as deacon, elder, various committees including St Paul's Cemetery Company and St. Paul's Home Association where he was a board member and President. He was a life member of Amity Athletic Club where he served as financial secretary, aided in building projects and bowled in their Monday night league at Jay Lanes for 40+ years. Spike enjoyed the outdoors evident in his career choice but also in his love for hiking with Scout Troop 597, camping with friends and family at Camp Harner, Promised Land, Ironstone campgrounds and even trailering cross-country enjoying the National Park System. He planted a large vegetable garden every year producing crops to be enjoyed through the winter months, sharing his surplus with family, friends, and the community.
In addition to his wife, Spike is survived by his daughter, Cynthia widow of Barry Templin, and his son, Michael Thompson. He is also survived by his grandchildren Alexander, Kyle husband of Kelly, Erin wife of Timothy, and Elsie, as well as his great-grandchildren Bailey, and Makenna. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Joella Bradshaw, Robert Thompson, Janet Williams, Fred Thompson and Sally Steinhauer.
Visitation with family and friends will be held on Saturday November 16, 2024 from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm with a memorial service beginning at 2:30 pm at St Paul's U.C.C. 1979 Weavertown Road, Douglassville, Pa. 19518. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St Paul's Home Association at above address or Tunnels to Towers Fundation 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island NY 10306.
