FORMER P.O.W., STAFF SGT. PAUL R. GORDON
Paul Revere Gordon, 94, born April 20, 1920, son of the late Edward and Ruth (Collins) Gordon of Cressona, Tamaqua and Reading, passed away May 27th, 2014 in his residence. With a love for airplanes, Paul enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 13, 1941, and was proud to be a ball turret gunner on the “flying fortress.” He was a member of the 92nd Bomb Group, 327th Bomb Squadron flying B-17F’s based at Bovingdon Field, Hertfordshire County, England. Shot down over France, Paul spent 31 months in a series of P.O.W. camps, including Stalag XVII-B. Paul married Audrey Winifred Mary Timms, his war bride from Hemel Hempstad, England on June 11, 1945. Their sons, Kenneth and Lee, completed the family. A highlight for Paul was returning to Mouchin, France (where the townspeople rescued him before the Germans found him) for a 50th anniversary, honoring him as he unveiled a memorial commemorating the sacrifice. Paul worked in the Grace Mines and later served on the Brecknock Township Police Department. Paul spent his later years speaking to numerous groups about his experiences. A book was also written, “Fourth Down; Can’t Run, Can’t Pass.” After the passing of Audrey in 1998, Paul married Ruth Margaret (Moore) Witzel on January 19, 2001. He was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church. He was pre-deceased by his older sister Myrtle Gordon, four step-brothers and step-father Howard Walker. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Gordon; Sons: Kenneth H. Gordon (Maria) of Narvon, PA and Lee W. Gordon (Sonja) of Elm City, NC, step-son Michael J. Miller (Jean) of Seneca, NE; Grandchildren: Jason Gordon, Kerri Vogel, Ryan Gordon, Matthew Gordon and Elissa Gordon, along with 10 Great-Grandchildren and One Great-Great Grandchild.
