Although baptized Mary Ellen, she had many other names. When born her Dad called her Jo. He called her that until he passes away in 1973. At the age of 3 a neighbor came home from the service and called her Elmer. The name stayed with her all through her school years and later on. George called her "ME" which later turned into Emmie, and this has been her nickname ever since.
She was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, class of 1958. She worked at CNA Insurance and after marriage was secretary treasurer of George Hafer Plumbing and Heating and Christmas Tree Farm. Emmie was an outdoor person. She began hunting at 16 with her brother Jack and at 18 she started her love of golf - first with her father at the Reading Country Club where she met George. She and George began their membership at the Berkshire Country Club in 1974, and she was Ladies Club Champion in 1987. She had one hole in one in her golfing career. She continued to golf until 2016.
Emmie was the Co Chair of the Pink Ribbon Golf Challenge for 22 years for the Benefit of the Breast Cancer Support Services. She will be remembered for her creative holes and her "Emmie Mobile". She will be remembered for her sense of humor and generosity. She was a lifelong member of St. Catharine of Siena and had served on the board of The Children's Home
She is survived by her sister, Anne Thomas and brother in law Bill Thomas, her step-daughter Ellen (Darte) Asbell, and her step-grandson Jan. As well as her nephew Tim, and nieces; Megan, Katy, and Susan. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband George, and her brother Jack.
