Levi Wegman

March 19, 1925 — July 8, 2024

Levi M. Wegman, age 99, passed away peacefully at home on July 8, 2024. He was born on the Wegman home farm in Limekiln, PA and lived his entire life in the Oley Valley. Levi was a 1943 graduate of Oley High School, where he met his wife, Bettye A. (Stitzer) Wegman, whom he wed in 1946. Levi and Bettye celebrated 73 years of marriage before she passed away in 2019. They had four boys: Marty, Doug, Brad, and Dwight.

Levi's early years were spent on the home farm where he helped with the gardens, animals, and house chores. This prepared him for a life of entrepreneurship. He grew his own business, L.M. Wegman & Sons Poultry, built the Reading Farmers Market at 8th and Penn streets in Reading, owned and operated apartment buildings in the community, and pursued various other business endeavors. During those working years, he was devoted to his church and family. Levi and Bettye were founding members of the New Life Bible Fellowship Church in Oley, and Levi was well-versed in the teachings of the Bible and lived his life accordingly. He ensured every member of his family was safe and loved and was the rock of the family. Until his last days, he was always active, both mentally and physically, whether it was climbing on his tractor to do yard work, cracking jokes, or enjoying gatherings and conversations with his family. As a prominent community member, he held a membership in the Masonic Lodge 62 and served on the Oley School Board.

Levi was very proud of his service in the Army during WWII. He traveled all over the United States and Europe with his signal corps unit, and he ended his WWII days as a staff sergeant in Japan while in the Army of Occupation. Once his boys were grown, he and Bettye traveled to over 40 countries, and he could recount all the details of these trips until his very last days.

He is the son of the late Walter and Carrie Wegman. He is predeceased by his wife Bettye, and all seven of his siblings. He is survived by his four sons; G. Martin Wegman of Exeter Township, husband of the late Lesley A. (Dunkelberger) Wegman; Douglas R. Wegman of Ruscombmanor Township husband of the late Linda M. (Curtin) Wegman; Bradley K. Wegman of Exeter Township, husband of Carolanne (Naylor) Wegman, and Dwight D. Wegman of Lower Heidelberg Township, husband of Sharon M. (Cowley) Wegman. There are 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss him dearly.
