Mary B. "Betty" Filer, of Jacksonwald, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday evening, April 14, 2024, at the Complete Care Nursing Center in Exeter Township. She was 96.
Betty was born January 18, 1928, in Exeter Township, to the late William L. Miller and Emily A. (Wentzel) Miller. She married the late Thomas R. Filer on June 8, 1956. Together they raised three children: Brenda L. Brown, wife of David L. Brown, Greenville, Pennsylvania; Thomas E. Filer, Jacksonwald; and William L. Filer, Jacksonwald. She was devoted to her two sons, who were always by her side.
She was a loving "Nana" to her two granddaughters, Jessica L. Cavalier, wife of Christopher Cavalier, Garrettsville, Ohio; and Meghan M. Brown, Greenville, Pennsylvania; also her two great-grandsons, Caiden M. Cavalier and Jaxson D. Cavalier, Garrettsville, Ohio.
Betty attended the Jacksonwald School, Exeter Township, and her early jobs included the Berkshire Hosiery Mills, Wyomissing, and Ludens Candies, Reading. Later, after raising her children, she was employed at the Hanne Pastry Shop, Antietam Valley Shopping Center, St. Lawrence; and Sweet Street Desserts in Reading. After her retirement, she and her close friend, Jean Close, were active as volunteers for local charities such as Meals on Wheels, Special Olympics, and the Pagoda Gift Shop. She was also a member of the United Church of Christ of St. Lawrence, where in her later years she was involved in the knitting club. She made many beautiful prayer shawls for nursing home patients.
When asked how she was doing, Betty always replied, "Oh, I'm hanging in there," which made the person smile.
