Ernest N. "Ernie, Nelson" Mengel

Ernest N. “Ernie, Nelson” Mengel, Sr., 76, of Reiffton, passed away January 29th, 2014 in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center. He was the husband of Sheila E. (Schmehl) Mengel. Born in West Reading, he was a son of the late Sylvester and Hazel (Taylor) Mengel. Ernie was a graduate of Reading High School, a member of F&AM Masonic Lodge #549, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Square and Compass and the Rangers. Ernie was employed by Firestone for 15 years as a maintenance supervisor then Georgia Pacific for 5 years as a Foreman/Supervisor and lastly as a maintenance welder for Occidental Chemical for 15 years until his retirement. In addition to his wife, Ernie is survived by: One Son: Ernest N. Jr., husband of Kathy (McCloughan) Mengel of Reading and One Daughter: Cheryl L. Ostrowski of Sinking Spring. He is also survived by Four Grandchildren Melinda, Marie, Julie, David and Four Great-Grandchildren. Ernie was pre-deceased by brothers Stuart and Kenneth Mengel and a sisters Jill Mengel and Beverly Rubenstein. Services will be held on Saturday February 1 at 11:00 am in the family owned Lutz Funeral Home, Inc. 2100 Perkiomen Ave. Mt. Penn. Friends may callon Saturday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
