Ronald Walter Gehret, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 84. Born on June 23, 1940, in Reading, Pennsylvania, Ron was the son of Elwood Gehret and Mary Petrillo Longo.
Ron graduated from Reading High School in 1958 and upon graduation served his country in the United States Marine Corps. His commitment to his country was paralleled by his dedication to his education. In 1969, Ron earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University, and ultimately obtained his Professional Engineer’s license.
Ron's career was marked by his 28 years of service at the Metropolitan Edison (MetEd) Electric Company. After his retirement, he started his own clock repair business, Mended Times, which he operated for 25 years.
On August 24, 1963, Ron married the love of his life, Barbara Handy. Together, they built a loving home and family, raising two wonderful children, Cheryl, and Doug. Ron was a proud and devoted father and found immense joy in his role as a Papa to his three cherished grandchildren, Sara, Stephanie, and Trevor.
He was a faithful member of Nativity Lutheran church serving on the church council and as a lector. He was a member of the Reading Country Club where he enjoyed playing golf with family and friends. Spending time at the beach with his family, listening to many genres of music, going out to dinner and Happy Hour were some of his favorite activities.
Ron is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara, his daughter Cheryl, wife of Carlos Scheirer, his son Doug, and his three grandchildren Sara, Stephanie, and Trevor. He is also survived by his two half-siblings, Jerry and Terry Gehret.
As we remember Ron, we celebrate a life well-lived marked by service, dedication, and a deep love for his family. Ron's memory will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know and love him. A celebration of life will be forthcoming in Windermere, Florida.
