Michael W. Shields, 28, of Douglassville, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2016. Born in Reading, he was the son of William and Diane (Christman) Shields. Mike was loved and known for his big smile, mechanical prowess, and need for speed.
A graduate of UTI in Automotive Technology, he enjoyed improving vintage race car engines at the family business restoring antique cars. In the near future, he envisioned opening a Honda performance business.
Racing was in his blood: he started with karts at age eleven alongside his life-long friend, Matt. More recently, he liked to use his free time to ride dirt bikes with his friends at Trevorton.
Mike was a genuine, big-hearted guy who friends and family could count on when they needed a hand, someone to talk to, or instruction on how to fix almost anything (but no one could touch his tools). He will be missed and remembered by his family and close group of friends.
In addition to his parents, Michael is survived by: two sisters, Rebecca S. wife of Francis Tay of Maine and Joanna L. Shields wife of Matthew Poore of Massachusetts; two nephews, Sev and Finnegan, and two nieces, Genevieve and Madelyn; maternal grandmother, Nona, as well as many, many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 12, 2016 from 2:00 pm 3:00 pm with a memorial service beginning at 3:00 pm in the Lutz Funeral Home, Inc., 2100 Perkiomen Avenue Reading, PA 19606. The family would like to collect written remembrances and photos to be shared at an open service. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League, P.O. Box 69, Mohnton, PA 19540. For online condolences, please visit www.LutzFuneralHome.com
