Philip C. Smythe, 91, of Exeter, PA, died Sunday, September 9, 2012 at his residence at Elmcroft. He had resided there for almost a year and had resided previously at Mifflin Court, Shillington for 10 years.
Prior to moving to Pennsylvania, Philip lived most of his life in Marion, VA and was born and raised in Roanoke, VA. ; the son of Marion Augustus and Hattie Hutcheson Smythe. Philip was a graduate of Emory and Henry College, Abingdon, VA and a veteran of World War II serving in the Philippines.
He was employed by Harwood Manufacturing Co. in Marion, VA for most of his career, as a personnel manager, retiring when he was sixty-five. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. He was an avid golfer and long time member of the Holston Hills Country Club in Marion.
He was married to Betty Perry Smythe for 49 years until her death in 1996. He was preceded in death by his son, Philip Michael on July 17, 2012.
Surviving are his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Happer Smythe, Marion, VA and his daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Robert Nase of Exeter and his two grandchildren and their spouses; Susan and James Mitchell of Philadelphia and Philip and Marcy Nase of Atlanta, GA. Always a loving father and grandfather he will be sadly missed by his family.
