Marjorie L. Wagner

Marjorie Elmira (Lebo) Wagner passed away on Wednesday, November 26, 2014. Marjorie was born on December 27, 1919, in Reading. She lived with her family, including her father, Paul R. Lebo (deceased), her
mother, Elizabeth A. (Wertz) Lebo (deceased), and her sister Laura E. Wentzel (deceased) at the
family home, initially at 219 South 17th Street, and subsequently 218 S. 16th Street, in Reading.
Marjorie graduated from Reading Senior High School in 1937, and Albright College in 1941,
(cum laude with AB degree), and took graduate level education courses from Pennsylvania State
University. After graduation, Marjorie began teaching Latin and English at Wyalusing
Consolidated School and then continuing in 1943 at Shillington High School.
In 1944, Marjorie joined the American Red Cross. After training at American University in
Washington, D.C., in December 1944 Marjorie departed Seattle aboard the Matsenia, bound for
Hawaii where she was assigned to the 147th U.S. Army General Hospital in Honolulu. In May
1945 she was assigned to the 5th Convalescent Army Hospital in Guam. In August 1945 she was
then assigned to the U.S. Navy Air Evacuation Unit at NAB Agana, Guam, where she
participated in the medical relief program for POWs being evacuated from Japan. Next, in May
1946, she was assigned to Club Service at the canteen on Kwajalein Island, and later in Saipan,
where she served to assist personnel related to atomic bomb testing at Bikini Atoll. She ended her
Red Cross service and returned to the States in September 1946. Marjorie’s role in the Red Cross
was a life-long source of great personal pride.
On September 4, 1948 Marjorie married William A. Wagner (deceased), and gained a step-son,
William Philip Wagner (of Burlington VT and New Smyrna Beach, FL). In 1949 the family moved
to 1050 Friedensburg Road in Stony Creek Mills. On February 4, 1950 her son Christopher Scott
Wagner, of Barrie VT, was born.
In September 1958 Marjorie began teaching Latin at Muhlenberg District High School,
continuing until June 1983 when she retired. In September 2008 she moved to the Highlands in
Wyomissing.
Marjorie was a member of the Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Pi Delta Sigma sorority
at Albright, the Historical society of Berks County, and the Reading Museum.
Survivors include her son Christopher and wife Lynda, her step-son Philip and wife Barbara, two
step-grandchildren, four step great grandchildren, two nephews, two great nieces, one great
nephew, four great-great nephews, and two great-great nieces.
Marjorie was a wonderfully loving, warm and cheerful person, with an exceptional capacity for
caring for family and friends. She will be missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, Marjorie wishes that any contributions be given to Bethany Evangelical
Lutheran church, 1375 Friedensburg Road, Stony Creek or to Hospice of the Berks County
Visiting Nurses Association.
