Richard D. Warmkessel, Jr., 83, of Reiffton, PA, passed away on December 31, 2016 at home following a brief fight with cancer. Richard (Dick) was born in Emmaus, Lehigh County, PA on March 27, 1933, son of the late Richard D. Sr. and Ella I. (Race) Warmkessel. He was the oldest of five children. He was the husband of Dixie L. (Harvey) Warmkessel.
Dick attended Emmaus High School and was a member of the classes of 1951 and 1953 as a result of an interruption to serve in the U. S. Army in the Korean War where he was assigned to Battery B, 213th Antiaircraft Gun Battalion. He attained the rank of Sargent during his two years of service. After graduating from High School, Dick attended one year at Kutztown College and then enlisted in the U. S. Air Force where he served with the 321st Bomber Wing of the Strategic Air Command. He attained the rank of Staff Sargent. Upon leaving the Air Force and getting married he worked for a truck leasing company in Pottstown and then for various auto dealerships in the Reading area as a truck sales and general manager. He finished his working career in real estate.
Once retired he became active in the Patriotic Order Sons of America (POS of A) and the American Legion. He was a member of the POS of A Camp #230 of St. Lawrence, PA where he served in the National Chairs and was Berks County Organization President. Dick was also a member of American Legion Post 878 of Oley, PA where he served as Jr. Vice Commander and Sr. Vice Commander. Dick also was a very active member of Community United Church of Christ of St. Lawrence where he served on various committees.
In addition to his wife, Dixie, Dick is survived by his son Jeffrey A. Warmkessel, married to Stephanie P. (Thomas) and two grandchildren Wade T. Warmkessel and Valerie A. Warmkessel all of Rockland Township, Berks County, PA. He is also survived by his brother James H. Warmkessel of Macungie, PA, and two sisters Sarah Ann Brugger of Palmer Township, Northampton County PA and Miriam E. Mazza of Easton, PA. Dick was predeceased by his daughter Jennifer L. (Warmkessel) Miller, and his sister Elizabeth L. Pantzer.
Visitation will be held on Thursday January 5, 2017 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am with services beginning at 11:30 am at Community UCC, 3330 St. Lawrence Ave, Reading, PA 19606. Interment in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Township.
