Kent Eby Weaver, MD, 85, passed away peacefully at Reading Hospital in Reading, Pennsylvania on February 27, 2023. Though he was known by several names - “Doc” to many in the Exeter Township community, “Sandy” to his closest friends, and “Pop-Pop” to his most devoted fans, he was perhaps best known for his bedside manner, booming voice, roaring laugh, and bear hugs. Kent was born on July 15, 1937 to the late Alpheus F.S. and Lucile A. Weaver in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After graduating from Manheim Township High School he earned a degree in biology from Franklin & Marshall College where he was on the football team. He went on to earn his medical degree at the Temple University School of Medicine, where he met his wife of 60 years, Mary Fay (Pendergast) Weaver.
Kent was on staff at the Reading Hospital and in private practice with his (predeceased) friend and business partner, Dr. Arthur Oplinger, for 33 years. He was also a long-time member of the Reading Country Club and the Reading Stamp Club. Kent was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy where he served as a First Lieutenant aboard the USS Guadalcanal in 1964.
In addition to his wife, Kent is survived by his four children, Beth (John), Kent (Julie), Chris (Michele) and Jena, and 14 wonderful grandchildren - Tom, Maggie, Brendan, Davis, Jack, Kenner, Tim, Evan, Katy, Connor, Morgan, Sam, Ryan, and Jacob along with beloved family including a sister-in-law, two brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Kent was predeceased by his sister, Louise Engle, his brother-in-law, Stephen Pendergast and his sister-in-law, Genevieve Loeschinger.
Visitation with family and friends will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2023 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am with a celebration of life beginning at 11:00 am at the Lutz Funeral Home, Inc. 2100 Perkiomen Avenue Reading, PA 19606.
