Joan E Zaharis

Joan E (Martin) Zaharis, 91, of Mt Penn, passed away on Sunday, June 27, 2021, in Manor Care Montgomeryville. She was the wife of the late George Zaharis. Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Ethel (Mosser) Martin and sister to the late Patsy (Martin) Dreher. Joan was a 1948 graduate of Reading High School and was a dancer at the "Katherine Beheny School of Dance" and always talked about her dancing days on Steel Pier. Joan also worked at the Berks County Courthouse in the court of common pleas until her retirement. She loved to dance, was one of the few to perform toe-tap, danced until she was 80 and liked to refer to herself as the best dancer in Reading. She loved going to the shore and wouldn’t miss a trip to sit at the beach and enjoy the boardwalk.

Although Joan didn't have biological children, she always treated her godson George Syrellis as her son. She is survived by George and his wife Gina, their children Tommy and Britney, who Joan treated as her grandchildren, her 3 great nieces Kristen, Nicole, and Andrea, and her cat Precious, plus many great great nieces and nephews.

Visitation with family and friends will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am with services beginning at 10:00 am in Lutz Funeral Home Inc. 2100 Perkiomen Ave., Reading, PA 19606. Interment will be at Forest Hills Memorial Park, Exeter Township. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
